Ryan Tibbens

Ryan Tibbens has lived in Berryville, Virginia with his wife, Ashley, for over ten years. They have three young children, a dog, a cat, and a large vegetable garden, meaning he spends much of his time taking care of others. He loves his family, town, and country and works hard to support and serve them. Mr. Tibbens has over 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience. He is originally from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Mechanicsburg Area Senior High. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from James Madison University in 2005 (Go Dukes!); he graduated magna cum laude and majored in English with minors in Secondary Education and Anthropology. He earned his Master of Arts in Teaching (Secondary Education, English) degree from James Madison University in 2006. After serving on the Berryville Board of Zoning Appeals in 2018-2020, Tibbens joined the Berryville Planning Commission and served the community in that capacity from fall 2020 until the beginning of 2023, when he took office as the Ward 4 representative on the Berryville Town Council. In the summer of 2021, he completed a state-recommended course through Virginia Commonwealth University and became a Certified Planning Commissioner. His other local service includes serving as the Prelate on the Board of Officers for the Berryville Moose Lodge #2139 from 2017-2018, coaching for Clarke County Little League since 2021, and volunteering through L.A.M.P.S. since 2016. Mr. Tibbens has earned many awards and acknowledgements for his work. The Heritage High School Class of 2010 voted him their "Most Valuable Teacher," and he has been honored at the annual Loudoun County Excellence in Education banquet nearly 20 times. He has also been named a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars. Tibbens was awarded Broad Run High School's 2015-2016 "Triple I" Award (teacher of the year-styled award) for his innovation, instruction, and impact. In 2019, Mr. Tibbens was named the "2019 Best Teacher" in the Loudoun Times-Mirror's "Best of Loudoun" contest. He was also named to the "Loudoun 40 Under 40" list of "rising business and community leaders" and the "Loudoun 100," a platform that showcases the extraordinary stories of ordinary people who influence life in Loudoun County and beyond. He also owns and operates TEST -- Tibbens Education Services & Tutoring, through which he offers a variety of tutoring, writing, consulting, and education services. He has completed the AP Institute for AP Language and Composition, the AP Institute for AP Literature and Composition, George Washington University's Teachers in Industry Program, and other specialized professional development programs. He is a Newsela and NoRedInk certified educator. Mr. Tibbens is currently or has been a member of the Virginia Association of Teachers of English (VATE), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), the Loudoun Education Association (LEA), Virginia Education Association (VEA), National Education Association (NEA), and served on VATE's Executive Board for three years. Mr. Tibbens is a member of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi International Education Honor Society, Lambda Alpha National Collegiate Honors Society for Anthropology (charter class at JMU), and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. |
